Detroit Success Story
As the largest city in the State of Michigan and a major port city located north of Windsor, Ontario, on the Detroit River, Detroit incurs a unique set of threat potentials. To address these threats the City of Detroit developed a new Homeland Security plan to better safeguard the people who live in, work in, and visit Detroit from natural disasters, power outages and acts of terrorism.
Part of the solution was to create a unified emergency management plan for in-home use to address medical and non-medical emergencies. This solution was created with the help of AUCTUS INC and included the Detroit Med-E-Book©, which was customized to communicate Detroit's specific city programs and emergency response instructions as well as providing basic first aid information.
AUCTUS INC partnered with the city, providing consultative solutions that were derived from several planning and strategy meetings with Police, Fire and Homeland Security offices, as well as community outreach focused organizations.
Through its functionality as a tool that can educate the citizens in basic first aid and emergency response, important during a major disaster when first responders are initially overwhelmed and conventional means of communication aren't operable, the Detroit Med-E-Book© becomes a useful quick response guide to refer to while trained help arrives.
By improving Detroit's ability to respond to, and recover from disaster, the Detroit Med-E-Book© strengthens preparedness by aiding in the collaboration of city resources and educating citizens on city programs in place.
HOMELAND SECURITY GRANT PROGRAM
The United States Department of Homeland Security is a Cabinet department of the Federal Government with the responsibility of protecting the territory of the U.S. from terrorist attacks and responding to natural disasters.
The City of Detroit was able to utilize the ability of the Med-E-Book© to provide Citizen Preparedness education, as explained in the US Department of Homeland Security Homeland Security Grant Program, to allow Federal grant dollars to implement the Detroit Med-E-Book© solution without cost to the city.
Working through Federal guidelines AUCTUS INC and the Detroit Office of Homeland Security provided the citizens of Detroit with an in-home single source reference guide that is where they need it, when they need it, in times of emergency. Detroit now sits at the top of the list as the first city to bring emergency preparedness education directly to the doorstep of its residents.
Together, the Mayor’s Office, the Detroit Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and Detroit City Council have taken yet another step towards facilitating citizen preparedness by empowering the community to be prepared.
